The Centre for Advanced Software Engineering, (CASE) is a centre of excellence in software engineering in UTM that has been established with the objective to provide opportunities for advanced studies and professional development for current and future needs of technology-based industries. The Centre was firstly set up in December, 1996 as a joint venture program between UTM and campus THALES, France was seen as a classic example of smart partnership in the country involving a transfer of high technology from Europe.
The campus THALES in Paris as a part of THALES, a giant corporation (formerly known as the THOMSON Corporation) provides the training ground for THALES Groups specializing in areas related to electronic and integrated components, air traffic control, military weapons system and telecommunications. It also organizes training programs leading to Diploma, Bachelor and Master degrees in partnership with leading international universities, graduate schools and other industries.
Leveraging on this smart partnership, CASE, in its pursuit towards academia-industry commitment and synergy had offered a Masters Program M.Sc in Real Time Software Engineering in January, 1997. CASE has committed to the provision of opportunities for professional training in software engineering standards and practices to local industries and individuals by offering short courses and degree programs. CASE for the first time in January, 1998 offered a Bachelors Programme in Real Time Software Engineering to MAS (Malaysian Airline System) to train its 20 software engineers in Software Development Methodology and its related field. CASE further extended its academic strategy by offering both full time and part time programs to provide more opportunities for interested parties to engage themselves in the cutting edge software technologies.
As of now over 400 individuals and 20 local companies or organizations such as MAS, SAPURA, CELCOM, TELEKOM, TNB, MIMOS, SIRIM, HiTech Padu, TI, NAVY and Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTA/IPTS) have participated in the programs available. First hand experience via smart partnership with THALES campus has spurred the centre to be more independent and self-sustained through commitment and desire to meet the current and future challenges in the IT Business and Corporate World. To ensure that, CASE works in line with local industries and current practices of software engineering.
Further efforts have been made to position CASE activities to meet with the MSC global strategies and flagship missions. As the trend of software engineering in local industries is now turning towards software quality and process improvement, the centre plays an important role in promoting and encouraging both the knowledge and business aspects. The centre actively participates in the setting up of SPIN Steering Committee for global software process improvement, SIRIM software quality and MSTB software testing and certification. Some training and short courses are offered at present by the centre either on in-house or site environment basis.
The School of Computer Science provides specialist teaching and conducts research in fundamental and applied computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence and cognitive science. We are proud to deliver outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate education that offers varied and exciting career opportunities around the world.
